dc.descriptionThe paper suggests the identification of C. Iulius Africanus, known from inscriptions erected at Tomis in honour of his daughter and son-in law, who belonged to the elites of the city, with the namesake centurion of the legio XI Claudia, attested epigraphically at Montana in Lower Moesia. This identification leads to a discussion of some aspects of social mobility and of the access of outsiders to the elites of a Greek city, as well as of the integration of Roman veterans into them. Rezumat: Despre C. Iulius Africanus din Tomis. Articolul propune identificarea lui C. Iulius Africanus, cunoscut din inscripţii ridicate la Tomis în cinstea fiicei şi a ginerelui său, care făceau parte din elita oraşului, cu centurionul omonim al legiunii XI Claudia, atestat epigrafic la Montana în Moesia Inferior. Această identificare prilejuieşte discutarea unor aspecte ale mobilităţii sociale şi ale accesului la elitele unui oraş grecesc, precum şi ale integrării veteranilor romani în acestea.
