Abstract
Description
Matrimonial Legislation at the First Provincial Synod of Alba Iulia and Făgăraș (1872). This article analyzes the matrimonial legislation of the First Provincial Synod of Alba Iulia and Făgăraș (1872), a milestone in the history of the Romanian Greek-Catholic Church. It examines the theological and juridical foundations of the synodal decrees, which addressed key issues such as the indissolubility of marriage, second unions, the discipline of married clergy, and the role of ecclesiastical tribunals in matrimonial causes. The study highlights the synod’s effort to balance fidelity to Byzantine canonical tradition with the requirements of the Holy See, reflecting the broader tension between Eastern identity and Roman centralization. By situating the decrees within their historical and ecclesial context, the article shows how the Church sought both to preserve its heritage and to align with universal Catholic discipline.
