Le titre, proleptique et métonymique à la fois, indique le chronotope du roman et anticipe autant la perspective narrative que le sujet du roman et l’importance du lien entre le neveu Marcello Martini et sa tante Vicky. Le récit de Marcello pose ainsi le problème d’un échec de la confession qui, placée à l’intersection d’une focalisation interne et d’une focalisation externe, traduit l’impuissance du personnage-narrateur à concevoir une vraie introspection qui atteindrait la conscience profonde : ses analyses se bornent, la plupart du temps, à des observations extérieures.en-US
