Abstract
Description
Bright Sheng (born. 1955), one of the representatives of the “New Wave” composers, has been trying to make a breakthrough in the fusion of Chinese and Western cultures in his works due to his childhood experiences and absorption of both Chinese and Western educational systems. “My Song” (1989) and “My Other Song” (2007) are two works for solo piano composed 18 years apart, in which the traditional Chinese instrumental or vocal technique “Run Qiang”润腔 is involved in both works. This paper emphasizes Sheng’s compositional style and the concept of “fusion” of Chinese and Western cultures in his musical works by analyzing how the elements of traditional Chinese “Run Qiang” in these two works that are fused with Western compositional techniques.
